In this episode, we sit down with New Bedford-based scallop fisherman/entrepreneur Ryan Tavares. Ryan tells us all about how he learned the ropes and first got onto a crew of a scallop fishing boat. He explains that scallop boats go out year-round, and when the captain says it’s time to get to the boat - you go. We also learn what each crew member is responsible for during their assigned watch and what some of the hurdles and risks involved are. We discuss what you eat when you have a scallop and what is different about them compared to a muscle or clam. During his time in the industry, Ryan came up with some clothing designs and originally launched them on a small scale in a couple of local supply stores.
